Message from Mr. Masafumi Sakurai, Committee Member 2012
My name is Masasfumi Sakurai. I have just been appointed a member of the Nuclear Reform Monitoring Committee of Tokyo Electric Power Company.
From the beginning of December last year to this July, I served as a member of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission established in the National Diet of Japan. During this time, I had the opportunity to evaluate the circumstances connected to the Fukushima nuclear accident from various perspectives and was able to point out various problems as well as provide suggestions for improvement.
As a member of the Nuclear Reform Monitoring Committee, I understand that my mission is to conduct strict observations based on my own experience of how Tokyo Electric Power Company should promote reform in a safe and secure manner.
Mr. Kiyoshi Kurokawa, Chairman of the National Diet of Japan Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission, also said to me, “You should demonstrate strong and unwavering leadership towards Tokyo Electric Power Company.” I intend to keep this in mind during my assignment.
Judging from the Independent Investigation Commission’s various activities, I have come to recognize that Tokyo Electric Power Company has a variety of problems in the areas of nuclear safety, crisis management as an enterprise, information disclosure and other response measures that were taken when the accident occurred.
I sincerely hope I will be able to contribute to the strict supervision of the power plants so that Tokyo Electric Power Company can properly carry out its reforms. As we move forward, your cooperation will be highly appreciated.
